BBC TV's ‘Caribbean Food Made Easy’ star and creator of Reggae Reggae Sauce, Levi Roots stars in a special new show which combines his talents as an inspirational speaker, chef and, first and foremost, marks a return to his first love as a reggae artiste to celebrate the release of his new album ‘Red Hot’. The show will feature Levi in concert as well as in his role as raconteur and chef with a live cookery demonstration.
Jamaican-born, Levi started recording and performing reggae in the 1970's, first as part of a band, with his brothers, and then later on as a solo artist. He set up his own record label in 1982, Conqueror Records and in the 1990's he started Soundbox Music. In 1998 he was nominated for ‘Best Reggae Performer’ at the MOBO awards.

At 29, the soulful Exeter-born jazz singer/songwriter Lizzy Parks already has three critically acclaimed albums under her belt. ‘Raise the Roof’, her debut album for the Tru Thoughts label, was a euphoric introduction - with rich, dramatic orchestration from fellow Exonian Riaan Vosloo it embodies Lizzy`s fresh and modern twist on a singer-songwriter tradition, encompassing elements of various styles from retro jazz and boogie soul to ambient modern experimental music.
She went on to collaborate with the likes of Nostalgia 77, with whom her first piece, ‘The Hope Suite’, was nominated for Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 ‘Worldwide Awards Jazz Track of the Year’.

The Dub Pistols formed in the mid-90s out of the chaos and energy erupting from the Heavenly Social-spawned big beat scene. Barry Ashworth and Jason O'Bryan were determined to mirror their wildly-diverse tastes in similar fashion to heroes like The Clash and Specials, who spectacularly broke out of punk's confines to embrace other musical forms like reggae. Their trademark style utilises special guest singers and MC's to front energetic big beat, dub, reggae and ska-infused tunes - Terry Hall from The Specials is a regular collaborator. Fourth album, ‘Rum and Coke’, continues the journey, this time using grooves more as vehicles for a songwriting frenzy which has resulted in their most mature album yet.
Reggae collective Pama International are another band with a Specials connection, featuring as they do Lynval Golding from the latter and they also supported them last year.

A continuously unfolding weave of contemporary jazz themes, minimalist soundscapes, improvisations, latin and downbeat grooves, this is a premiere of a new jazz suite commissioned for the Vibraphonic Festival and performed by the October Ensemble, a 10 piece featuring tenor/soprano saxophone, jazz rhythm section, violins, cello, flugelhorns and French horn. Accomplished saxophonist-composer Pete Canter presents jazz in a new context and breaks all the rules about what a jazz gig is supposed to be like. ‘Ununbium’, Pete's most recent quartet album of original music was described as "varied, exciting, exceptional" (Keith Ames, The Musician).

A surprise but welcome winner of last year's Mercury Music Prize with her debut album ‘Speech Therapy’, Speech Debelle, like all musicians worth listening to, draws you into her universe and makes you glad you visited. ‘Searching’ was her debut single and a perfect example of the offbeat, folky production that litters the album, as well as the whisper-in-the-ear quality of her vocals, the honeyed tone of her warm voice contrasting with her mature, articulate lyrics and poetic swagger. Renowned for her ground-breaking range of influences and contributors, one thing is certain hip hop has never been done in quite this way before.
Best known as the technically adept MC of the vaunted Blackalicious, Gift of Gab knew that after waiting over 5 years for a follow-up solo release that he would have to really take this one far. ‘

Sierra Maestra are the guardians of the Cuban son music tradition. Their infectious dance music never fails to get crowds up on their feet and the band were instrumental in the revival of the genre in the late 1970s and 80s. Named after the mountain range on the east of Cuba, and birthplace of the son, the group’s aim was to revive and re-introduce this popular Cuban music style from the 1920s and 30s to the contemporary mainstream audience. ‘Their sheer energy made them sound quite unlike traditional revivalists. Sierra Maestra may be veteran ambassadors of the Castro era, but they evoke the glamour associated with Havana in the forties and fifties.’ – The Guardian

It's difficult to think of many blues-rock icons who have stood the test of time quite as well as the Texas White Lightning, Johnny Winter. Currently enjoying a remarkable renaissance, his sensational appearance on Eric Clapton's recent ‘Crossroads’ show and ferocious slide guitar soloing on ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ proved he can still make the sparks fly in the blistering Texas guitar tradition, stretching back to T Bone Walker, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and ZZ Top.

One of the most exciting jazz trios in the country today preview tracks from their eagerly anticipated new album, to be released in April. When their last album came out, ‘Loud Louder Stop’, it launched the band into another world of TV appearances and festival performances and was in Mojo's top 50 albums of 2008. Neil Cowley is not only a virtuoso pianist but he has a boldness that enables him to seamlessly meld other influences culled from his touring days with major bands, including The Brand New Heavies, Gabrielle and Zero 7.
